Obituary of John T. Davern

John T. “Big Bird” Davern, age 65, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 16, 2023, with his loving family by his side. Born in Brooklyn on January 18, 1957, John was the son of the late Michael and Amelia (Hogaboom) Davern. His childhood years were spent in Brooklyn before relocating to the Utica area where he met and fell in love with the former Teena Stefanski. John and Teena were married on March 6, 1982 and together shared in a blessed and devoted union of over forty years. For many years, John was employed with St. Luke’s Hospital where he worked as an orderly. He absolutely loved his family and his home and could often be found watching MeTV classic television, M*A*S*H and especially loved cartoons! He was always puttering around and tending to his yard and of course was an avid New York Yankees fan. His cool, calm demeanor will be forever missed by those he leaves behind. He is survived by his wife, Teena; his daughter and son-in-law, Kristina and Hank Boshart of Kentucky; his son, John Davern and fiancé, Sara Castellano of Ilion; his grandchildren, Courtney Rose, Austin and Raymond; his great-grandchildren, Jamal, Jakai and Jax; and by his loving sister, MaryAnn Wallace, whom he lived next door to. He also leaves his sisters-in-law, Geri Shultz and Susan Ally; along with numerous nieces and nephews, with special mention of JoAnn, Joslyn and Joseph whom were like siblings to John; numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends; and of course, his beloved four-legged companion, Christmas Joy. John was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Doreen Thorne; his brothers, Michael “Micky” Davern and Patrick “Patty” Davern; his brother-in-law, whom was like a father to John, Joseph “Sonny” Wallace; his niece, whom was like a sister to John, Berta Guerriera; his niece and Goddaughter, Amelia and his niece, Elizabeth; and his nephew, David “Chubby”. He was also predeceased by his in-laws, Patty Bardo, Walter “Yogi” Stefanski, Joey Stefanski and his parents-in-law, Walt and Barb Stefanski. A special thank you is extended to the emergency medical personnel from MOVAC and to the Frankfort Fire Department for their efforts and compassion not only on the day of John’s passing, but throughout the years. An ode of gratitude is also offered to Jackie, Anita, Heather and Sue from the Masonic Care Community Dialysis Center for their friendship and guidance. Friends and relatives are invited to attend visitation on Saturday, January 21, 2023, from 2:00PM – 5:00PM at the Enea & Ciaccia Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, Town of Frankfort, Ilion, NY (315) 894-8000. John’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Saturday at 5:00PM at the funeral home, immediately upon the conclusion of visitation. Interment will take place in Armory Hill Cemetery in Ilion at the convenience of the family.
