Obituary of Robert L. Engells

MOHAWK – Mr. Robert L. “Bob” Engells, age 91, a lifelong Mohawk Valley resident, passed away peacefully on Friday afternoon, July 15, 2022, at Valley Health Services in Herkimer. Born on February 7, 1931, Robert was the son of the late Charles F. and Alberta (Mills) Engells. He was raised and educated locally, graduating from Ilion High School with the Class of 1948. Robert went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force and remained a proud veteran through the rest of his days. On April 24, 1954, Robert was wed to the former Ruth Rivenburg, and together they shared in a loving and blessed union of over fifty-four years, until Ruth’s passing on April 9, 2009. Robert spent the majority of his career as a letter carrier with the United States Post Office, retiring in 1991. He was also a life member of the Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post 25 in Mohawk. In his spare time, Robert was a history buff, an avid reader and a sports fan, particularly enjoying hockey and football. Robert is survived by his daughters, Enola Denison and her husband, Gary, of Ilion and Tracy McCumber of Norwich; his sons, Robert Jr. of Utica and Grant and his wife, Marian, of Mohawk; his grandchildren, Shannon (John) Stewart, Sara Denison, Robert McCumber, Colleen Engells, and Scott (Chelsey Lawson) McCumber; his great-grandchildren, Fiona Stewart, Luna Clements, Aurora Clements, Leah McCumber, Royal Stewart, Gemma McCumber and Callum McCumber; his sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth “Betty” and William Woodward of Deansboro; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and in-laws. A Graveside Service will take place on Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at 10:30AM at Mohawk Cemetery where Robert’s earthly remains will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife. Full military honors will be accorded by the US Air Force.
