Obituary of Mary L. McCumber

FRANKFORT – Mary L. McCumber, age 83, formerly of S. Litchfield St. and Canal St., Frankfort, passed away peacefully, on Friday, February 11, 2022, at Valley Health Services, Herkimer, with her family by her side. She was born on August 28, 1938, in Rochester, NY, the daughter of Patsy and Angelina (Camizzo) Calitri and graduated from Rochester schools. Mary was a veteran, serving in the US Army. On December 2, 1960, she was married to Frederick C. McCumber, in Greensboro, SC. He died on November 22, 1996. For about 20 years, Mrs. McCumber was employed as a paper carrier, at the Utica Observer Dispatch. She later was a bus monitor for Bernie Bus Co., assisting handicap people and young children. Mary was also a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church and the Frankfort American Legion. Surviving family members include her 7 children: Bert McCumber and his wife, Carol, Kathryn Porter and Larry Barkley, Deborah LaVeck and her husband, Joseph, Frederick McCumber, Jr., Michael McCumber and his wife, Michelle, Stephen McCumber and his wife, Sheryl and Angelina McCumber and Stephen Schenkenfel; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents; and her brothers, Joseph Calitri and Samuel Calitri. Calling hours will be held on Monday, February 14, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home’s original location, at 102 West St., Ilion. If you are planning on attending the calling hours, please wear a mask, so we can protect the health of the immediate family and others. Thank you for your understanding and consideration. Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at Our Lady Queen of Apostles Church, at 412 S. Frankfort St., Frankfort, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Paul Catena, Pastor. Anyone wishing to share a memory of Mary, or add to her online memorial, may go to www.applegateandday.com. In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made directly to her daughter, Deborah LaVeck, 3484 State Route 167, Little Falls, NY 13365, for the purpose of a special scholarship in Mary’s name, to be set up to help girls going into military service. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Mary’s service arrangements and supervision are entrusted to her Family Funeral Director and long time friend, Don Applegate.
