Obituary of Robert J. Fuhs

FORT PLAIN – Mr. Robert J. Fuhs, 94, a longtime resident of Valley Brook Road, Fort Plain, passed away on Sunday, September 5, 2021, with loving care of his family at his side, at Bassett Healthcare, in Cooperstown, New York, after a brief illness. Robert was born October 13, 1926, in Fort Plain, the son of the late Walter J. and Mildred (Dowling) Fuhs and was a lifelong Fort Plain resident. His education began in Fort Plain and later at Fort Plain High School, graduating from there. Following school, he went on to become a soldier with the United States Army, World War II. His honorable discharge was received after a Philippine Island tour, a recipient of the Army of Occupation Medal, Japan, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Philippines Liberation Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. On March 25, 1966, he married Myrtle Elaine Congdon, of Indian Castle. They were married for 60 years. Throughout the years Bob was employed with the Village of Fort Plain. He was a member of the Fort Plain VFW and the American Legion. He was an avid hunter, especially of pheasants, rabbits and deer. He enjoyed sitting in the park in Fort Plain with his friends. Survivors include his beloved wife, Myrtle; his son and daughter-in-law, Walt and Donna Fuhs, of Louisville, Kentucky; his granddaughter, Tamsen Fuhs, of Seattle, WA; his sister-in-law, Sally Fuhs, of Sauquoit; and nieces, Darlene, Donna, Diane, Debbie and Dolores; and Myrtle’s living siblings, Edie, Lois, Freddie, Earl and Ray. Also, there are many nieces, great-nieces and nephews; and his dog, cocoa. He was predeceased by his brother, Donny Fuhs. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2021, at 12:00 Noon from the Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center Street, in St. Johnsville, New York, with the Rev. Nancy Ryan, presiding. Burial will then be in Fort Plain Cemetery with full military honors. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Saturday morning, prior to the funeral service from 11:00 until 12:00 Noon. All are welcome to attend the calling hour, the funeral service and the interment to follow. A small reception at the Fort Plain Fireman’s Park will be held after the interment at the cemetery.
