Obituary of David J. Cook

SALISBURY CENTER - David Jonathan Cook passed away peacefully on Saturday March 24th, 2018 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Utica, New York with his wife and mother at his side.

Dave was born in Herkimer, New York on October 24th, 1958, the son of Eleanor (Ferguson) Cook and the late Gerald Cook. He attended Little Falls schools. On October 21st, 2006 he was united in marriage with the former Jamie Van Veghten at the Indian Castle Church in the town of Danube. They enjoyed 12 years of marriage together but were a couple for 20 years.

During his lifetime he worked at various jobs, including farming, driving truck for Daniel Green’s in Dolgeville, and for a short time, as a custodian at Notre Dame High School.  In 1998 he was a maintenance mechanic at LaSalle Labs in Little Falls, where he met Jamie.  His favorite job however, was working as a welder at Mohawk Metals in Utica.

Dave enjoyed time spent with his Furkids, Rascal, Spookie and Wolf, going on adventures with Jamie and taking long rides in the country. He could often be found sitting at the picnic table in the back yard, listening to the creek.

Besides his wife and mother, Dave is survived by his twin sister Laurie Demoff, his sisters Charlotte Frasier (Brian),  Donna Amorosia (Jim) and his step-children Neil Bandel, Nicole Kennedy and Renee’ O’Brien, whom he helped raise and thought of as his own children. He also leaves behind his in-laws, Gary Van Veghten, Bonnie Abbott, Ginny Van Veghten and Jamie’s extended family. Dave will be missed by his paternal uncle and aunt, Charles and Jean Cook as well as many cousins, and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his father, Dave was predeceased by his grandparents including his beloved “Grandma Dorothy” Ferguson, his adored Aunt Mary Schiebel, as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, and special friends Ron Olson and Bud Butterfield. Dave is sure to meet his cherished German Shepherd, April, who has been waiting for him at the Rainbow Bridge.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 3rd, 2018 at 10:30 AM at the Enea Family Funeral Home 24 W. Monroe St. Little Falls.  A service will follow immediately at 11 AM.  Afterward, family and friends are invited to a celebration of Dave’s life to take place at the Travelodge in Little Falls. Those wishing to remember David in a special way are asked to consider a donation in his memory to the Herkimer County Humane Society, P.O. Box 73 Mohawk, NY 13407. http://www.herkhumane.org.

We would like to thank the staff of the St. Luke’s ICU including Andrey, Janice and Donna for the great care they took of Dave in his last days. Special thanks also to all of Dave’s doctors including Drs. Kashtanova, E. Wassel, Koussa and Din, the staff at Herkimer Dialysis and the entire staff of AC3 for their love, caring and support shown to Jamie.
