Obituary of Harry M. Cook

FRANKFORT – Mr. Harry M. Cook, who lived a long and fulfilling life of 97 years, passed away peacefully, in his sleep, on Friday evening, March 2, 2018.

Born in Schuyler, on February 24, 1921, Harry was the son of the late Harry and Flora (Williams) Cook. He was raised and educated in the Utica area and upon his graduation from high school, went on to enlist with the United States Army.

After basic training, Harry was deployed overseas, and proudly served his country throughout the duration of World War II. He toured in Africa and Italy with the Engineer Airborne Battalion, operating as a diesel mechanic where he was responsible for repairs and maintenance on the air fields. Upon his honorable discharge on November 5, 1945, Harry was awarded both the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

On April 17, 1954, Harry was united in marriage to the former Rosemary Estelle Brockway, and together they shared in a loving and devoted union of over 63 years; remaining constant in the respect, admiration and care they showed for one another.

Harry was proud to begin working as a carpenter alongside his father as a teenager. Upon his return from war, he was self-employed as a carpenter and craftsman, and was a proud member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Union for over 55 years. In the 1960s, he began working for Hubbell Galvanizing and held a position with them for over forty years, until his retirement as a Superintendent Foreman in 2004.

Beyond his achievements as a veteran and skilled craftsman, Harry was a hardworking husband, a proud father and a doting grandfather. He had a brilliant mind and an amazing life story, and truly led a life well lived.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Rosemary; his son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Sheila Cook of Utica; his son-in-law, Joseph Farley of Florida; his sister, Margaret Cook of Frankfort; his grandchildren, Joseph and Christina Farley, Lisa Bienkowski, Rebecca Farley and Emma Cook; his great-grandchildren, Morgan, Garrett, Shawna, Mykel and Kendal; two great-great-granddaughters, Victoria and McKenzie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Joyce Farley; his brother, Milton Cook; and his sister, Agnes Butts.
