Obituary of Sandra L. Surace

HERKIMER – Miss Sandra L. “Sandy” Surace, age 57, a lifelong Mohawk Valley resident, passed away peacefully on Monday evening, February 12, 2018, at Valley Health Services in Herkimer, where she had been a resident for the past twelve years.

Born on October 13, 1960, in Herkimer, Sandra was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Mastromatteo) Surace. She was raised and educated in the Herkimer area and as a young woman, attended Herkimer BOCES.

Sandy was a beautiful person, loved by many. In her youth, she loved to play sports and earned many medals in the Special Olympics. She also enjoyed fishing, and had a sincere love of music for her entire life. She will be truly missed by many.

Sandy is survived by her brother, Craig D. Surace of Springboro, Ohio; and a special aunt, Mary Gigliotti of Herkimer, who looked in on Sandy daily and was truly her “angel on earth.” She also leaves her aunts and uncles, Ida and Walter Gronemeyer of Palm Springs, California, Josephine and John Iocovozzi of Jacksonville, Florida, Jane Yaworski of Little Falls and Frank and Donna Mastromatteo of Centerville, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Mary Jane Surace of Surprise, Arizona; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents, Sandra was predeceased by her brother, Ronald Surace.

A graveside service for Sandra will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Herkimer, in the Spring of 2018, at a date and time to be announced.
