Obituary of Janet Mae Cotton

CEDARVILLE – Janet Mae Cotton, age 77, of Cedarville, passed away peacefully, on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown, with her family by her side. She was born on July 28, 1944, in Rensselaer, NY and graduated from Rensselaer High School. She spent her childhood growing up in the Rensselaer area before moving to the Mohawk Valley to be near her older sister, Sandra Redden (deceased) during her first marriage. Janet met and married Carl Cotton, Sr., on July 24, 1979. Since then they have spent the last 42 years in the adventure of marriage. They shared raising four children between their first marriages and two children they created together, though Janet considered all six children as hers and loved and cared for them deeply. Janet liked having most of her children living close by and was proud of being a grandmother. Janet had fought several serious illnesses the last couple decades of her life, but she did not let that stop her from volunteering her time and energy to the community that she loved. She started as an EMT and firefighter with the Cedarville Fire Department, but as her illnesses progressed, she became a member of the Auxiliary in support of her beloved Fire Department. Janet was strong in her faith throughout her life. Over the last few years, she had attended Oak Ridge Free Methodist Church, in Herkimer, however, the last year she worshipped at Scotch Bush Free Methodist Church, in Lassellsville. Janet also enjoyed camping with her husband, Carl. They spent the season with their faithful companion, Tripp, cooking on the grill hosting their family and friends and the pleasure of the peacefulness of the campfire. Janet is survived by her husband, Carl Cotton, Sr. and six children and several grandchildren: Carl Cotton, Jr. and his daughter, Brianna, Christine Combs and her husband, Douglas and their sons, Darryll Combs and Michael Combs, Calvin Cotton and his wife, Laura and their children, Calvin James Cotton, Ashley Cummings, Johnny Phillips III, Rachel Phillips and Ryan Davis, Nicole Rose and her husband, Richard and their children, Alex Rose and Elaina Rose, Shawn Cotton, Matthew Cotton and his wife, LeeAnn and their son, Dylan Ellis. She is also survived by two nieces and their families, Tammilyn Dolan and Samantha Redden; several great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; cousins; and several other nieces and nephews. Please join Janet’s family for a Celebration of her life, at the Cedarville Fire Department, on Saturday, February 19, 2022.
