Obituary of Betty F. Watkins

MOHAWK – Betty F. Watkins, age 90, of Mohawk, passed away peacefully, at St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center, Utica. She was born on October 11, 1931, in Ilion, NY, the daughter of Marshall Dewey Hisert and Elizabeth Ward Hisert. Betty graduated from Mohawk Central School, with a Regents Diploma. On May 17, 1952, she was married to Richard “Dick” H. Watkins, at Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk, with Father Brennock presiding. Dick died on December 26, 2017. Betty was a housekeeper at Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk, for Father Adams, Father Steuer and various Missionaries, for many years. At one time, she was a housekeeper for Dr. Shaughnessy. Betty was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Church and enjoyed quilting, sewing and gardening. She was also a wonderful cook. Surviving family members include her daughter, Rebecca Volo and her husband, Vernon, of Mohawk; her son-in-law, Edward Scouten, of Ilion; her 5 grandchildren, Jennifer Bull and her husband, Dr. Ronny Bull, of Frankfort, Erica Miscione and her husband, Paul, of New Hartford, Janelle Roginski and her husband, Steven, of Mohawk, Michael Scouten and his wife, Amanda, and Kierston, of Rome and Jason Scouten, of Ilion; her 8 great-grandchildren, Zachary Champoux and his wife, Kaila, Matthew Miscione, Samuel Sophia and Silas Bull, Francis Mae and Eleanor Louise Roginski and Michael Scouten, Jr.; her sister, Marsha Shahoud; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Dick; her parents; her daughter, Debbie Scouten; her brother, Richard “Dick” Hisert and sister-in-law, Shirley Hisert; and brother-in-law, Raymond Shahoud. Friends and relatives are invited to her visitation, on Tuesday, October 19, 2021, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home’s larger location, at 4309 Acme Rd. (old Main St.) between Ilion and Frankfort. A Family Prayer Service will follow at 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home. If you are planning on attending the funeral home visitation, the family would appreciate it if you could please wear a mask to keep everyone, including the family, safer. Thank you. Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, October 20, 2021, at the Blessed Sacrament Church, E. Main St., Mohawk, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Leo Potvin, assisted by Sister Mary Jo Tallman, Parish Life Director. Burial will be in Mohawk Cemetery, next to her husband, “Dick”. Anyone wishing to share a memory of Betty, or add to her online memorial, may go to www.applegateandday.com. The Watkins family has entrusted Betty’s service arrangements and supervision to her Family Funeral Director and cousin, Don Applegate. The family would also like to thank Don’s wife, Judy, for all of her help and assistance.
