Obituary of Maria S. Austin

ILION – Maria S. "Fina" (Torres) Austin, age 80, passed away peacefully early Friday morning, September 24, 2021 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica. At the time of her passing she was in the hearts of those she loved most. Born on August 26, 1941 in Maunabo, Puerto Rico, Maria was the daughter of the late Daniel and Maria (Camacho) Torres. Her early years were spent in Puerto Rico before relocating to New York as a young woman. On February 12, 1972, Maria was wed to Mr. Robert Austin in Brooklyn and together they shared in a blessed marriage of over thirty years until Robert’s passing on October 10, 2002. Maria was a very fun-loving, kind and generous individual who constantly gave of herself to others. Over the years she volunteered at St. Luke's Hospital and was a local school crossing guard. Nothing gave her greater joy than being surrounded by her beloved family. Maria was very devoted to her Catholic faith and was a longtime parishioner of the Church of the Annunciation in Ilion, where she sang in the choir. She was also a long time member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Maria is survived by her son, David Austin of Utica; her daughters and son-in-law, Susan Torres of Rensselaer and Mari and Matthew (Max) Grainger of Mohawk; her brother, Francisco Torres and Ana Cardona; her special nieces, Civita Lape and Victoria Torres; her grandchildren, Antoni Tedesco, Liam Grainger, Tristan Grainger, Frankie Murray and Brandon Austin; and one beloved great-grandson, Camryn Tedesco. She also leaves numerous extended family members including nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins, too numerous to mention. Aside from her husband and parents, Maria was predeceased by her brother, Anibal Torres; and her sisters, Christina Torres and Gloria Byrne. A special thank you is extended to the healthcare professionals and staff of the St. Elizabeth Medical Center ICU for the care and compassion shown to Maria and her family during her last days. Friends and relatives are invited to attend calling hours for Maria on Tuesday afternoon, September 28, 2021 from 4:00PM – 6:00PM at the Enea & Ciaccia Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, Town of Frankfort, Ilion, NY (315) 894-8000. Maria’s funeral service will commence on Wednesday morning, September 29, 2021 at 9:45AM at the funeral home and at 10:30AM at the Church of the Annunciation in Ilion, where her Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Rev. Paul Catena, Pastor. Procession will follow to Armory Hill Cemetery where Maria’s earthly remains will be laid to rest.
