HERKIMER – Teresa M. Ostrander, age 56, passed away peacefully on Monday afternoon, January 31, 2022, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, after many years of prolonged health issues. Born on January 9, 1966 in Ilion, Teresa is the daughter of Richard J. Ostrander and Diane M. (Harvey) Ostrander. She was raised and educated locally, attending Herkimer and Mohawk Schools, before graduating from JFK in Utica. When she was in her twenties, Teresa relocated to the Rochester area where she attended SUNY Geneseo for a time. She then worked as a Security Guard at the Xerox Corporation as well as for the American Red Cross, both in Rochester. Teresa was a free spirit who appreciated music and had a special place in her heart for both Stevie Nicks and Melissa Etheridge. Subsequently, she enjoyed attending many concerts throughout the years. She was also very savvy on the computer and had a love for reading. When Teresa was in high school, she was a gifted star athlete in field hockey, volleyball and softball. She was a lifelong sports fan and avidly cheered for the New York Yankees and the Buffalo Bills. This competitive spirit is what helped her along later in life, when she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis as a young woman. Fourteen years ago, she returned to the Mohawk Valley and went to live at Valley Health Services in Herkimer. She remained a resident there throughout the rest of her life and created many lasting and meaningful relationships with the staff and residents alike. The Ostrander family is forever grateful for the outstanding care and compassion that Teresa was given by the nurses and caregivers at this wonderful facility. Teresa is survived by her parents, Richard Ostrander and his wife, Mick, of Litchfield and Diane Ostrander and her partner, Ed Schultz, of Utica; her siblings, Kerry Schmidt and husband, Bill, of Whitesboro, Sharon Ostrander of Germantown, MD, and Jim Ostrander of Utica; by her two nephews, Jeffrey Schmidt and wife, Jessica, of Hawaii and Steven Schmidt of North Carolina; as well as by many aunts, uncles and cousins. Friends and relatives are invited to attend Teresa’s visitation on Thursday, June 23, 2022 from 11:30AM – 1:00PM at the Enea & Ciaccia Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, Town of Frankfort, Ilion, NY (315) 894-8000. A prayer service will be held at 1:00PM at the funeral home, immediately upon the conclusion of visitation. Procession will then follow to Litchfield Cemetery where Teresa’s earthly remains will be laid to rest. For those wishing to do so, please consider memorial contributions to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, PO Box #91891, Washington, D.C. 20090.
